“Regime Change Through Ballot is More Effective Than Protests” – Kwankwaso to Nigerians
As Nigeria braces for a nationwide protest set to start on August 1, 2024, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and the national leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), has urged organizers to reconsider their plans. Instead, Kwankwaso advocates for a regime change through the ballot box.
In a statement released on Friday night, Kwankwaso argued that democratic processes are more effective than protests in addressing government incompetence. He emphasized that the power of voting can bring about more enduring and positive change.
Kwankwaso acknowledged the widespread dissatisfaction with current governance, noting issues such as federal interference in Kano State’s chieftaincy affairs, the impeachment of Edo State’s Deputy Governor, political instability in Rivers State, and rampant insecurity. He attributed these problems to a lack of accountability and transparency among leaders.
“The current state of our nation is a result of missed opportunities since 2007, but there is still a chance for correction,” Kwankwaso stated. He stressed that the power of the ballot should be harnessed to correct the course of governance and secure the country’s economic and social future.
While recognizing the frustration fueling the calls for protests, Kwankwaso cautioned against the potential for violence and chaos that such demonstrations could bring. He advised Nigerians to channel their energy into the electoral process, which he believes will lead to more effective and peaceful transformation.
“Protests, though a democratic right, often lead to violence, property damage, and further division,” Kwankwaso warned. “Let us focus on constructive change through the power of our votes, which can help us build the Nigeria we all envision.”
