“Protests Triggered by Akpabio’s Insensitive Statement,” Says Advocacy Group
In a statement released on Monday, the Coalition for Parliamentary Democracy (CPD) has attributed the ongoing protests across Nigeria to recent remarks made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The group asserts that Akpabio’s comments, which suggested that while Nigerians protest, government officials continue to enjoy their privileges, have incited public outrage.
Dr. Menike Johnson, the CPD’s National Coordinator, criticized Akpabio’s remarks, labeling them as reckless and indicative of a government disconnected from the people’s struggles. According to Johnson, the youth, in particular, have been infuriated by the Senate President’s insensitivity, leading them to accuse the federal government of being uncaring and inconsiderate.
The CPD further highlighted that Akpabio’s statement seems to contradict the inclusive and empathetic message promoted by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “Such a statement portrays Akpabio as having an agenda starkly different from that of President Tinubu,” the group stated.
The CPD has called for accountability, emphasizing that if Nigeria’s current situation deteriorates further, Akpabio’s statements will be a significant contributing factor.
