Protesters Vow To Burn Lagos Police Station Over Killing Of Estate Resident By Inspector
Youths in the Ajah area of Lagos State on Wednesday protested and besieged the Ajah Police Station over the killing of a resident of Happy Estate identified as Gafaru Buraimoh by a trigger-happy Police Inspector.
SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin in a statement on Wednesday morning said the police officer had been arrested and detained.
The police spokesperson said the incident happened at around 11:30p.m on Tuesday but the police inspector was overpowered and his gun taken from him after killing Buraimoh.
Buraimoh was said to have gone to a Point of Sale (POS) vendor around the area when the bullet from the Inspector, who was among cops pursuing black market fuel sellers, hit him.
Whereas the police spokesperson had called for calm and said investigation was already on, angry youths reportedly gathered at the Elemoro Area Command in protest from 8am on Wednesday.
The protesting youths were said to have blocked the expressway, preventing vehicular movements and thereby stopping people going to work.
It was gathered that as the number of the angry and protesting youths increased, the police allegedly released teargas to scare them but it made the situation riotous.
The protesters were said to have vandalised properties and were attempting to burn the police station.
Meanwhile, as of the time of filing this report, the police have not made any comment about the protest.
“The Lagos State Police Command through the Area Commander, Elemoro and Divisional Police Officer, Ajah has since notified and established contact with the family.
“The Command, while commiserating with the family of the deceased over the avoidable and most unfortunate incident, gives assurances that the already commenced investigation into the immediate and remote circumstances leading to the shooting will be brought to a speedy and conclusive end, while equally ensuring that justice is served,” the police spokesperson had said.
