Protest in Awka Over Killing of 26-Year-Old by Security Operatives
Tensions rose in Awka on Friday as residents staged protests over the killing of a 26-year-old man known as “Akidi,” allegedly by operatives of state-backed security groups.
The incident reportedly occurred বৃহস্পতিবার evening in Mgbakwu. The victim’s full identity has not yet been officially confirmed.
Witnesses said operatives linked to the Anambra State Anti-Touting Squad (SASA) and a local security outfit, Udogachi, were involved. Accounts of how the killing happened differ, with some alleging the victim was stabbed and others claiming he was shot. Authorities have not released a formal statement clarifying the circumstances.
On Friday, protesters, including youths and women, marched through Awka, converging on the state police command headquarters and offices associated with the security outfits. Demonstrators demanded the arrest and prosecution of those responsible, raising concerns about the conduct of enforcement units in the state.
Chants from the crowd reflected fear and anger, with protesters questioning who might be the next victim.
The protest comes amid growing criticism of security operations under Governor Charles Soludo. Critics argue that units established to address crime are operating without sufficient oversight.
Community leader Chimaobi Kingsley Egwu shared footage of the protest and the deceased on social media, accusing the security groups of exceeding their mandate. In a letter addressed to the governor and security agencies, Egwu described the outfits as a source of fear for residents.
He also referenced a similar incident in Mgbakwu less than a year ago involving the Udogachi group, suggesting a pattern of alleged abuse.
Attempts to obtain official responses yielded little clarity. The state’s Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, declined to confirm details and referred inquiries elsewhere. The governor’s security adviser, Ken Emeakayi, did not respond to follow-up requests, while police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga could not be reached.
The incident adds to wider national concerns about the conduct of law enforcement personnel. A recent case in Delta State involving a police officer shooting a restrained suspect has drawn public outrage and renewed scrutiny.
In Anambra, protesters say they will continue demonstrations until authorities address the situation and ensure accountability.
“We cannot have a system where those tasked with protecting citizens are accused of harming them,” one protester said.
