President Tinubu Plans Major Overhaul of Key Government Agencies

In a move aimed at reforming Nigeria’s justice sector, President Bola Tinubu’s administration is reportedly preparing to overhaul several key government agencies. This initiative is intended to address ongoing issues within the justice system, including delays in case adjudication and low prosecution rates, particularly within the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Sources within the government have indicated that this overhaul will affect the leadership of agencies such as the NDLEA, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS), Code of Conduct Bureau, Public Complaints Commission, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and the Legal Aid Council. Some of the agency heads may be dismissed, while others could be reassigned to different roles.

The planned reforms will also extend to the Supreme Court, Courts of Appeal, and High Courts to address the substantial backlog of cases and expedite the judicial process. These changes may come into effect following the National Summit on Justice, which President Tinubu is set to inaugurate on April 24, 2024.

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, revealed that the reforms are aligned with Tinubu’s agenda to protect citizens’ rights, improve access to justice, and ensure speedy case resolution.

Within the NDLEA, concerns have been raised about alleged favoritism in promotions, irregularities in rank assignments, and a lack of transparency in recruitment processes. Despite the agency’s recent performance in arresting drug offenders, the low prosecution and conviction rates have prompted calls for drastic reform.

President Tinubu’s commitment to enhancing the rule of law and promoting justice sector reform reflects his experience as a transformative leader in Lagos. The broader goal is to create sustainable, efficient institutions that uphold fundamental human rights and provide equal access to justice for all Nigerians.
