Presidency Clarifies Cybersecurity Levy Amid Mounting Outrage Over Economic Hardships
Bayo Onanuga, spokesperson to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has provided clarification on the recently introduced cybersecurity levy amidst growing public outrage over Nigeria’s economic challenges. Contrary to initial reports of a 0.5% levy, Onanuga emphasized that the actual rate is 0.005%.
The Central Bank of Nigeria’s directive to banks to collect and remit this levy to the National Security Adviser has sparked significant discontent among citizens. Many view the imposition of additional financial obligations as insensitive, particularly in the face of soaring fuel and electricity prices, as well as numerous deductions and levies on bank transactions.
Onanuga’s clarification attempts to assuage public concerns by highlighting the lower rate in line with the levy’s establishment law. However, the prevailing economic difficulties have amplified skepticism and distrust towards government policies.
Amidst this backdrop, the announcement of multiple taxes by Tinubu’s administration, including plans to reintroduce the Telecommunications tax, has further fueled public frustration. These measures, seen as burdensome amidst the country’s economic turmoil, have intensified calls for greater transparency and accountability in government financial decisions.
