Pregnant Woman Detained by Vigilante Operatives Over Husband’s Alleged Theft, Rescued by Police
Anambra State Police Command has intervened in the case of a pregnant woman, identified as Mrs. Chidinma, who was detained by operatives of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) in Okija, Ihiala Local Government Area. Her detention was reportedly tied to an unpaid debt allegedly owed by her husband.
The incident, which sparked outrage after a video went viral showing the woman held in the vigilante group’s security office, prompted swift action from the police. According to reports, Mrs. Chidinma had spent two days in detention before her rescue.
The State Police Commissioner, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, ordered her immediate release upon learning of the situation. In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the commissioner condemned the vigilante group’s actions, describing the detention as an abuse of power.
Ikenga clarified that the case involving Mrs. Chidinma’s husband was related to allegations of theft, not unpaid debt. The commissioner emphasized the importance of addressing the misconduct of some vigilante operatives to prevent such incidents in the future. He assured the public that necessary measures would be implemented to curtail any unprofessional behavior within the ranks of the vigilante group.
