Political Tensions Surge in Rivers State as Wike, Fubara Reignite Feud

Rivers State is currently engulfed in a renewed political crisis as 27 out of 32 members of the State House of Assembly defected from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This development follows failed mediation attempts, including those by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to reconcile the escalating feud between Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The political discord between Fubara and Wike, marked by irreconcilable differences, had previously led to tension and division, culminating in an attempt by the State Assembly to impeach the governor. The crisis reached a boiling point when the House of Assembly complex was bombed, with each side accusing the other of orchestrating the violence.

Allegations have surfaced, suggesting that the unrest stems from unfulfilled demands by Wike, including a request for 25% of the state’s allocation and a share of the federal palliative funds. In response, Wike dismissed the claims as purely political, emphasizing his commitment to remaining politically relevant.

Fubara, initially adopting a conciliatory tone, recently vowed never to succumb to blackmail and intimidation, asserting his determination to protect the state. This shift in tone was followed by the mass defection of 27 State House of Assembly members loyal to Wike to the APC, citing internal divisions within the PDP.

Amidst the turmoil, legal battles have unfolded, with the PDP national leadership demanding fresh elections to replace the defected lawmakers. The Labour Party has also called for the declaration of vacant seats, further complicating the political landscape.

In a recent twist, a High Court in Port Harcourt confirmed Edison Ehie as the authentic Speaker of the State House of Assembly, adding another layer to the ongoing power struggle. This decision comes as Fubara, in a counter move, summoned an emergency executive council meeting, approving the 2024 budget proposal.

Public Affairs Analyst Nduka Odo urged Governor Fubara to focus on winning the people’s hearts through transformative projects. As the political drama unfolds, observers question the long-term impact on the state’s development and call for a system to mitigate such distractions orchestrated by political figures.
