Police Officer Found Dead in Suspected Suicide in Niger
A police officer in Niger State has been found dead in an apparent suicide, causing shock in the community of Kontagora. The officer, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shafi’u Bawa of the 61 Police Mobile Force (PMF), was discovered hanging from the ceiling of his room on Saturday afternoon.
According to sources, his father, Mallam Usman Bawa, was the first to notice something was wrong and quickly reported the matter to the Kontagora Police Division.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident through its spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun. “On 8/2/2025 at about 2pm, it was reported that one ASP Shafiu Bawah of 61 PMF Kontagora committed suicide by hanging himself on the ceiling due to a yet-to-be-ascertained reason,” he said.
Authorities have since handed over the officer’s body to his family for burial, while an investigation is underway to determine what led to the tragic event.
