Police Officer Confronts Junior Colleague Over Roadside Extortion, Orders Public Display and Refund of Cash
A senior officer of the Nigeria Police Force has been captured on video confronting a junior colleague accused of extorting money from motorists, ordering him to publicly surrender the cash.
In the widely circulated footage, the senior officer—speaking from inside his vehicle—directs the junior officer to remove all money in his possession and place it on the bonnet of a nearby car. The junior officer, appearing visibly shaken, complies by taking cash from his pockets and laying it out as instructed.
The location of the incident is believed to be Abia State, although this has not been independently verified.
Throughout the exchange, the senior officer rebukes the conduct, questioning the legitimacy of collecting money from motorists and commercial tricycle operators. He emphasizes that police duties are limited to crime prevention and lawful enforcement procedures, not roadside collections.
He further warns the officer of possible disciplinary action, referencing the prospect of being reported to headquarters. The junior officer, in response, repeatedly apologizes while attempting to approach the senior officer, who instructs him to maintain distance.
The senior officer also outlines proper procedure, stating that any fines or penalties must follow formal processes, including documenting offences and taking suspects to the station if necessary.
The incident has renewed attention on longstanding allegations of extortion involving police personnel at checkpoints and along major roads, where drivers frequently report being asked to pay unofficial fees.
