Police Nab Notorious Armed Robber, Hired Assassin in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a notorious armed robber and suspected hired assassin, John Samuel, in what authorities described as a major breakthrough against violent crime in the state.

The 28-year-old suspect, originally from Akwa Ibom State, was tracked to his hideout in Epe and taken into custody on Friday, September 19, 2025, at about 2:00 p.m. Police sources confirmed that Samuel was only recently released from prison after serving six years for armed robbery.

Investigations revealed that on August 18, 2025, Samuel allegedly shot and wounded businessman Gbenga Obama in broad daylight on Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja. He reportedly dispossessed the victim of a gold necklace and other valuables before fleeing with an accomplice on a waiting motorcycle.

CCTV footage obtained by investigators showed Samuel firing an English pistol before snatching the jewellery. The victim sustained serious gunshot wounds but was rushed to hospital and later discharged after treatment.

During interrogation, Samuel admitted to selling the stolen necklace for ₦4 million—far below its market value—and confessed to returning to violent crime shortly after regaining his freedom.

Police say efforts are ongoing to track down other members of Samuel’s gang. Once investigations are concluded, the suspects will be charged in court.

Commending his officers for the swift arrest, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, assured Lagos residents of the Command’s commitment to keeping the state safe.

“Lagos has no hiding place for criminals,” he declared, urging citizens to go about their daily activities without fear.
