“Police Have Power to Break Into Any House Without Warrant” – Spokesman Defends Officers Amid Outrage

The Nigeria Police Force has defended its authority to enter properties without a warrant if officers suspect criminal activity. This response follows public outcry over a viral video showing masked, armed policemen invading a private residence without proper identification or documentation.

The video, which surfaced online, captures two masked officers carrying AK-47 rifles, ordering the occupants of an undisclosed property to open their gate. The residents refused, demanding to see the officers’ faces and a search warrant. In response, one officer fired a shot before scaling the fence and opening the gate for his colleague. The incident has sparked fresh concerns about police brutality and accountability.

Reacting to the footage, Police Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, acknowledged that officers have the power to forcibly enter a property if they have reasonable suspicion of criminal activity. However, he criticized the officers’ conduct, particularly their improper dressing and use of masks. He emphasized that such attire is not permitted for police personnel and questioned the justification for the raid.

“The police have the power to break into any house or place where they are reasonably convinced an offence is being committed. That is understandable,” Adejobi stated. “But I am not too okay with their dressing and appearance. Policemen are not allowed to wear masks or tie headgear. These are issues we need to address.”

Adejobi confirmed that the video has been shared with relevant police authorities for further investigation. He urged the public to provide details about the incident’s location to aid in identifying the officers involved.
