Police Arrest Suspected Informants Behind Deadly Herders’ Attack in Enugu
Two individuals suspected of aiding militant herders in a deadly attack on Eha-Amufu, a farming community in Enugu State, have been arrested by police in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area. The suspects, identified as 26-year-old Matthew Ebeh and an unnamed woman, allegedly served as informants and collaborators to the attackers, leaking security information and guiding them into the community.
According to government sources, Ebeh was captured after a local resident managed to escape the assault and raised an alarm. The attack, which occurred on Sunday, June 15, left at least 12 people dead and several others missing, prompting residents to flee their homes and abandon their farms.
Governor Peter Mbah, during a meeting with Assistant Inspector General of Police Abayomi Oladipo at the Lion Building in Enugu, reaffirmed his administration’s zero tolerance for crime and reiterated the state’s commitment to sustaining peace and security. He described Enugu as one of Nigeria’s safest states despite the tragic events in Eha-Amufu, blaming what he called a deliberate campaign of misinformation for attempts to tarnish the state’s image.
Governor Mbah highlighted recent investments in security infrastructure, including the establishment of a Command and Control Centre, an AI-powered surveillance system, and a Distress Response Squad with over 150 security vehicles. These, he said, are part of a broader strategy to enhance investor confidence and grow the state’s economy from \$4.4 billion to \$30 billion.
“No crime committed in Enugu will go unpunished,” Mbah said. “We do not tolerate insecurity, and we will continue working closely with security agencies to maintain the safety we enjoy in this state.”
AIG Oladipo commended the Mbah administration for its efforts, noting a significant improvement in security and affirming that new strategies for inter-agency collaboration are being implemented to prevent further violence.
