Police Arrest Man for Selling 5-Day-Old Baby for N1.5m in Ebonyi
The Ebonyi State Police Command has arrested a man, identified as Chukwuma Onwe, for allegedly selling his five-day-old newborn son for N1.5 million.
According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, the suspect, a native of Nwezenyi Ibeagu community in Izzi Local Government Area, sold the infant to Mrs. Chinyere Ugochukwu, who has also been arrested.
Ukandu said both suspects were apprehended on Friday in the Azugwu area of Abakaliki, the state capital. The baby was recovered safely from the buyer and has since been reunited with his biological mother, Mrs. Philomena Iroko.
“Mr. Onwe took the child from his wife under the pretext of taking him for treatment but instead sold him to the buyer,” SP Ukandu stated. “He further deceived his wife by claiming he had handed the baby over to his sister for care.”
The police spokesperson added that the command has launched a full investigation into the case, assuring the public that justice will be served.
