Police Arrest Four Alleged ESN Militants in Anambra

Nigerian police have arrested four alleged militants of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) in Ufuma, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State. The ESN is known as the militant wing of the secessionist group, Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The Anambra State Command, in collaboration with a joint security force, intercepted the suspects on Monday. The police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, announced the arrests in a statement released on Tuesday in Awka, the state capital.

Ikenga disclosed that the arrests were the result of extensive intelligence gathering concerning planned attacks by the group on security agents and civilians. Among the arrested individuals is 32-year-old Maduabuchi Nwafor, also known as Omenkpo, a native of Ufuma. Nwafor is allegedly a native doctor for the ESN, using his shrine for initiation ceremonies and as a meeting point for criminals.

Additionally, one suspect, whose name has been withheld, is reportedly cooperating with the police. He confessed to being one of the gunmen deployed by the ESN to enforce an illegal sit-at-home order on May 30, 2024.

Commissioner of Police CP Nnaghe Obono Itam has ordered an extensive investigation to uncover more hideouts of the insurgents. He reassured the public of the police’s commitment to protecting the state’s development and ensuring the safety of informers.

“The police command under my leadership will continue to serve the people of Anambra selflessly and will protect our sources of information to ensure the safety of those who assist us,” said CP Itam.
