Plateau State Declares Three Days of Mourning for School Collapse Victims

In a solemn response to the tragic collapse of Saint Academy School in Jos, the Plateau State government has announced a three-day period of mourning. From July 13 to July 15, all flags in the state will be flown at half-mast to honor the 22 lives lost and the many injured in the disaster.

On July 12, 2024, the school building in Busa Buji, Jos North Local Government Area, collapsed during class hours, leading to the devastating loss of lives and injuries among students and teachers. The government’s mourning declaration was communicated through a statement by the Plateau State Commissioner for Information, Musa Ashoms.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang visited the scene of the tragedy on Saturday, offering his condolences to the affected families. He emphasized the critical importance of adhering to building codes and ethics to prevent such incidents in the future.

“We offer our deepest sympathies and unwavering support to those affected during this incredibly difficult time. We are dedicated to providing the best possible medical care for the injured and will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the collapse,” said Governor Mutfwang. He further stressed the need for developers and property owners to have their building plans verified by the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) as part of enforcing Executive Order 003.

The Governor has also mandated the immediate closure of Saint Academy School and announced a full investigation into the incident. He stated, “It is unfortunate what has happened but of course what it means is that this school is closed down immediately. We can’t take any further chances and we need to send this message particularly to owners of private schools. The motive for profit must not overshadow the safety of lives.”

In addition, Governor Mutfwang announced a technical audit of all schools to assess their structural integrity, ensuring they are safe for habitation.

As of 24 hours post-incident, 22 individuals have been confirmed dead. Fifty-eight people are receiving treatment in the hospital, while others have been treated and discharged. The government remains committed to supporting the injured and bereaved during this difficult period.
