Photos: Ogoni Community Celebrates Hunter After Rare African Fish Eagle Kill
Residents of Taabaa in Ogoni, Rivers State, have praised a local hunter known as Spirit Man for killing an African Fish Eagle, a bird considered rare and significant in the region.
According to a Facebook post shared by community members, the eagle holds symbolic importance in Ogoni tradition, representing strength, royalty, and honour. While sightings of the bird are uncommon, killing one is even rarer.
On January 12, 2026, the hunter presented the eagle at the ancestral palace of Mene Asaa, where it was formally recognized and blessed.
The African Fish Eagle is native to several southern Nigerian states, including Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, and Cross River. However, its population has been declining due to habitat loss, environmental pollution, and human activities such as hunting.
