Photos: Fayemi Orchestrates Surprise Meeting Between Tinubu and Obi in Rome
In an unexpected gesture of political civility, former Ekiti State governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi played a key role in facilitating a warm exchange between President Bola Tinubu and former Labour Party presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi during the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV in Rome on Sunday.
The Vatican ceremony, attended by global leaders and dignitaries, was notable not only for its solemn significance but also for the surprising moment of unity among three prominent Nigerian politicians. Fayemi, a devout Catholic and Papal Knight, reportedly encouraged Obi—also a Papal Knight—to join him in greeting President Tinubu, who was seated among other world leaders at St. Peter’s Square.
According to presidential aide Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Fayemi spotted the president and invited Obi to accompany him in paying respects. “Fayemi sighted President Tinubu, where he sat with other leaders and asked Obi to follow him to pay homage to the Nigerian leader. Obi agreed,” Onanuga said in a statement.
Upon reaching Tinubu, Fayemi broke the ice, saying, “Mr. President, welcome to our church, and thank you for honouring the Pope with your presence.” Tinubu, known for his quick wit, reportedly responded, “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.” The response prompted laughter from Obi, who replied, “Yes, indeed. We are members of your delegation.”
The light-hearted moment was significant given the strained political relationship between Tinubu and Obi, who were rivals in the 2023 presidential election. Obi has remained a vocal critic of the Tinubu administration, frequently drawing sharp rebuttals from the presidency. Their Rome encounter has since stirred varied reactions on social media, reflecting the political divide among their supporters.
Some users criticized the framing of the event, suggesting it was being politicized, while others welcomed the display of mutual respect. “Good to see the president allowed Peter Obi to greet him. Politics of bitterness should have no room in our country,” one user posted.
The encounter unfolded against the backdrop of a historic moment for the Catholic Church. Pope Leo XIV’s inauguration marked the beginning of his papacy with a call for global unity, peace, and inclusivity. In his homily, he urged the Church to walk together in love and remain united as one family.
President Tinubu led Nigeria’s delegation to the ceremony, which drew tens of thousands of worshippers and leaders from around the world. Pope Leo XIV expressed deep gratitude for the global support and prayers, reflecting on the emotional journey leading to his assumption of the Petrine Ministry.
