The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Amos Daniel, also known as “Gambit,” for the alleged murder of a woman believed to be his girlfriend in a hotel located in the Ayobo-Ipaja area of Lagos.
The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, July 17, 2025. Daniel reportedly checked into the hotel around 5 p.m. with two friends. A female later joined them in the room. At about 10 p.m., strange noises were heard coming from their room, prompting concern from other guests and hotel staff.
A guest who identified himself simply as Adio told *Punch* that after hearing disturbing sounds from the adjacent room, he and a security staff member tried to make contact but got no response. Using a spare key to access the room, they found the woman lying lifeless in a pool of blood with multiple injuries. Hotel staff immediately raised an alarm, leading to a frantic search for the other occupants of the room, who had fled.
According to a hotel employee who spoke on condition of anonymity, Daniel was found hiding within the hotel premises and was caught while attempting to flee through the gate. He was reportedly beaten by an angry crowd before the police were called. Witnesses claim he confessed during the confrontation that he and his two accomplices killed the woman for ritual purposes.
The victim has been identified as Endurance, a native of Akwa Ibom State.
Lagos Police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin confirmed the incident in a statement released on Sunday. He said the hotel manager reported the crime at Ayobo Police Station on Friday, noting that Daniel had checked in without providing a home address. Hundeyin added that the hotel manager, while fueling the generator around 8 p.m., heard the strange noise and later discovered the victim’s body in the room with injuries inflicted by a sharp object.
Daniel and his companions reportedly fled immediately after the murder, but Daniel was apprehended by hotel staff during an attempt to escape. A dagger suspected to have been used in the attack was found on him during his arrest.
According to the police, the victim sustained multiple stab wounds to her stomach, head, and ribs. Further investigation led to the recovery of several items from Daniel’s premises, including a UTC axe, cutlass, machete, jack knives, a laptop, service jungle boots, a local sponge, and a large pair of scissors.
The victim’s body has been deposited at the Mainland General Hospital mortuary in Yaba for preservation and autopsy. The case file, exhibits, and suspect have all been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yaba, for further investigation.
