In a potentially catastrophic incident on Friday, a tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) experienced brake failure and overturned at the Agu-Awka Junction near Awka, Anambra State. The driver attempted to navigate through challenging road conditions, leading to the accident.
Swift intervention by the Anambra State Fire Service prevented a disaster, as the spilled petrol was swiftly addressed to avoid ignition. Fortunately, no lives were lost, thanks to the timely response of the fire service.
Chief Fire Officer Martin Agbili confirmed the incident, stating, “On Friday, November 2023, the Anambra State Fire Service received a distress call of a fallen tanker loaded with PMS at Agu-Awka junction due to brake failure of the tanker.”
Agbili further explained, “Our two fire trucks and fire-fighters were immediately deployed to the incident scene for the rescue operation. With the application of water and chemical foam compound, the flowing PMS was diluted to prevent it from catching fire.”
Acknowledging the collaborative efforts of security operatives, Agbili expressed gratitude to the Nigeria Police Force, FRSC, and NSCDC for their role in crowd and traffic control, facilitating the fire-fighting operation.
Despite some damage to the tanker, the contents were successfully trans-loaded at night, ensuring the safety of the surrounding area. Anambra residents are relieved as the combined efforts of emergency services averted what could have been a tragic incident.
