Peter Obi Urges Tinubu to Release Nnamdi Kanu, EndSARS Detainees
In a compelling call to action, Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, has demanded the immediate release of detained IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu and other detained EndSARS protesters. Speaking passionately to reporters in Onitsha on Saturday, Obi underscored the critical need for enhanced security measures across Nigeria, warning of potential national failure if urgent steps are not taken.
“The government’s primary duty is to ensure the security of life and property. Without security, no nation can thrive,” Obi declared, expressing deep concern over escalating violence and insecurity plaguing Nigeria. He acknowledged government efforts while urging for greater collaboration among leaders to confront these challenges, particularly in the South-East region.
Regarding Nnamdi Kanu’s prolonged detention despite court-ordered bail, Obi emphasized, “There is no justification for his continued incarceration. The rule of law must prevail, and all individuals in similar circumstances should be released promptly and engaged in dialogue.”
On the issue of protests, Obi clarified his stance: “I support peaceful protests as a democratic right, but I condemn any form of violence or destruction of public property.” Reflecting on past protests, he highlighted the importance of addressing leadership failures rather than blaming frontline officers for systemic issues.
“I urge the immediate release of all detained individuals, whether they are freedom fighters, EndSARS activists, or journalists exercising their right to free speech,” Obi asserted, stressing the democratic imperative of listening to citizens’ grievances.
In conclusion, Obi urged a return to democratic principles, urging leaders to refrain from authoritarian actions and restore civility in governance.
