“Peace and Justice Will Always Win in the End” – Governor Obaseki Appeals for Calm After Edo Election
Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has called on citizens to remain calm and refrain from any acts of violence or property destruction following the recent governorship election results. In a broadcast on Sunday, Obaseki addressed the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) declaration of Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, as the winner of Saturday’s poll.
Obaseki’s party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), lost the election, with APC’s Okpebholo securing 291,667 votes, while PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, received 247,274 votes. In his speech, Obaseki suggested that the PDP would challenge the election results through democratic and legal means, citing concerns over what he described as “blatant disregard for law and process.”
The governor expressed sympathy for Edo citizens who feel disillusioned by the election’s outcome, noting the heavy toll it has taken on the spirit of the people. However, he urged the public to avoid violent reactions, insisting that peace and justice would ultimately prevail.
“It is obvious to even the least discerning the level of impunity and reckless disregard for processes and the law in this gubernatorial election,” Obaseki said, acknowledging the frustrations many feel. However, he emphasized that democracy provides avenues for addressing grievances and encouraged citizens to trust in these systems.
He further implored residents to continue their daily activities without fear, stressing the government’s commitment to their security and well-being.
“The attractive thing about democracy is the power it bestows on the people to choose their leaders. When this power is blatantly seized from them, it becomes a tragedy and a travesty. Nonetheless, I urge all Edo citizens to stay peaceful and maintain calm as we pursue justice through lawful means,” Obaseki added.
