Governor Okpebholo Restores Oba of Benin’s Full Authority, Reverses Obaseki Policies

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has taken significant steps to restore the traditional authority of the Oba of Benin, reversing decisions made by the previous administration. In a series of actions aimed at strengthening ties with the Benin Kingdom and respecting its cultural heritage, Governor Okpebholo abolished the traditional councils created by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki, in the Edo South senatorial district. He also reinstated the statutory financial entitlements of the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), returning to the pre-existing status quo.

The governor announced the withdrawal of a revocation letter issued under the previous administration concerning the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre. The cultural centre, which had been repurposed as a motor park, will now be restored to its original function, preserving its cultural significance.

In alignment with a Federal Government directive, Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed the Oba of Benin’s exclusive rights over ancient artefacts looted during the 1897 Benin massacre. The Federal Government had issued a gazette recognizing the Oba as the custodian of the repatriated artefacts. Governor Okpebholo underscored his administration’s commitment to respecting this directive, distancing the state from the previous administration’s Museum of West Africa Art (MOWAA) project and backing plans for the Benin Royal Museum.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Fred Itua, emphasized the administration’s respect for the customs and traditions of the Benin Kingdom. He reiterated the government’s commitment to refraining from interfering in the internal affairs of the Benin Traditional Council while fully supporting the Oba’s role as the cultural and spiritual leader of the Benin people.
