PDP Senate Caucus Gives Conditions for Supporting 2027 Coalition Against Tinubu

The Senate Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed openness to a coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections, provided the alliance is driven by political parties rather than individuals. Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, speaking after a caucus meeting in Abuja, emphasized that the PDP, as the largest opposition party, should lead any such coalition.

Moro stated that the PDP’s platform is broad enough to accommodate all who seek a coalition and urged that political parties coordinate these efforts to ensure effectiveness. This stance comes amid reports that key opposition figures, including PDP’s 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party candidate Peter Obi, are exploring coalition options outside the PDP, possibly under the Action Democratic Congress (ADC).

Despite internal challenges and debates about coalition viability, the PDP Senate Caucus rejected claims of party collapse, affirming that PDP remains strong and is actively repositioning itself for future elections. They called on party members to stay loyal and stressed the importance of a robust opposition for Nigeria’s democracy.

In related party affairs, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) appealed to the South East Zonal Executive to reconsider threats of mass defections over disputes surrounding the national secretary position. The South East caucus had nominated Sunday Ude-Okoye to replace Senator Samuel Anyanwu, whose tenure has been controversial. While the NWC assured the zone that the matter would be addressed at the next meeting and forwarded to the National Executive Committee (NEC) for resolution, calls for patience and unity were emphasized.

An insider from the PDP’s NWC revealed that the NEC holds the final authority to resolve the national secretary crisis, despite conflicting recommendations and legal challenges. The Supreme Court recently nullified lower court rulings that had supported Ude-Okoye’s appointment as acting national secretary, reinforcing that only the NEC or party convention can remove or appoint a national secretary. The internal disputes have highlighted tensions within the party, but leadership urged members to adhere to the party constitution and democratic procedures.

Overall, the PDP leadership continues to manage internal conflicts while preparing strategically for the 2027 elections, maintaining that a party-driven coalition remains the preferred path forward in challenging the ruling party.
