PDP Responds to President Tinubu’s Independence Day Speech: “Nigerians Need Not Pass Through This Hardship”
In a sharply-worded press statement released today, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) responded to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 63rd Independence Day Address, labeling it as “empty” and “bereft of ideas.” The PDP accused the President of being aspirational in the wrong direction and failing to address the dire hardships faced by Nigerians under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration.
President Tinubu’s acknowledgment in his speech that his administration bears responsibility for the current hardship in the country drew sharp criticism from the PDP. The opposition party asserted that this admission underscores the incompetence and lack of vision in the Tinubu-led government.
The PDP argued that Nigerians should not have to endure such hardship if the nation were governed by a capable and visionary administration. They called for a government that can harness the country’s economic potential, leverage its comparative advantages, and stimulate job creation.
Expectations were high for a presidential speech that would provide concrete solutions to pressing national issues, including security, the electricity crisis, and petroleum sector problems. The PDP emphasized that a serious government should develop comprehensive plans for critical sectors to stimulate economic growth.
The PDP criticized the APC administration for its ill-planned policies, which led to the closure of multinational companies, the decline of Small and Medium Enterprises, and massive job losses. The party highlighted the absence of clear measures to revamp various crucial sectors, including manufacturing, agriculture, food production, transportation, healthcare, and education.
President Tinubu’s speech did not offer solutions to the devaluation of the Naira, soaring unemployment rates, or the increasing emigration of Nigerians. Additionally, there was no mention of the ongoing security challenges plaguing the nation, such as abductions, killings, and mass burials.
Regarding the welfare package announced by President Tinubu, the PDP criticized it as inadequate, citing the provision of a mere N25,000 per month for six months to low-grade workers. The party also expressed skepticism about the promised cash transfer programs, fearing they might be misused by corrupt APC leaders.
In conclusion, the PDP contended that President Tinubu’s speech demonstrates the APC administration’s lack of plans, capacity, and competence to govern effectively. The opposition party called on Nigerians to take note of the administration’s perceived shortcomings in addressing the country’s pressing issues.
