PDP Northern Leaders Endorse Kabiru Turaki as Consensus Candidate for National Chairman

Northern leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have endorsed former Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Kabiru Turaki, as their consensus candidate for the position of national chairman.

The endorsement followed a meeting of northern PDP stakeholders held in Abuja on Wednesday night, attended by prominent party figures including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, and the current PDP National Chairman, Umar Damagum.

The PDP is set to hold its national convention on November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, where new members of the National Working Committee (NWC) will be elected.

However, efforts to halt the convention are ongoing. A suit filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja by Austine Nwachukwu, PDP chairman in Imo State; Amah Abraham Nnanna, Abia State chairman; and Turnah George, the party’s South-South secretary, is seeking to stop the exercise. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/2120/2025, challenges the legality of the planned convention and asks the court to restrain the party from proceeding. The plaintiffs are reportedly allies of Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The court has fixed October 31 for hearing.

In August, the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) zoned its presidential ticket to the South, a move that aligns with the party’s tradition of balancing leadership roles, thereby positioning the national chairmanship slot for the North.
