PDP Has Not Conducted South South Zonal Congress – NWC
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has clarified that it has not conducted its South South Zonal Congress, contrary to claims made by organizers of a social gathering in Calabar, Cross River State. The party’s National Working Committee (NWC) issued a statement disassociating itself from the event and reaffirming that no such congress has taken place.
The PDP emphasized that during its NWC meeting on February 20, 2025, it exercised its constitutional powers to postpone the South South Zonal Congress, which had been scheduled for February 22, 2025. The decision was made to allow for further consultations on crucial issues necessary for the smooth conduct of the congress.
Citing relevant provisions of the PDP Constitution, the NWC explained that it has the authority to act in emergencies on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), supervise the party’s operations at all levels, and establish electoral regulations governing party elections. Based on these powers, the party reiterated that the congress has not taken place and a new date is yet to be announced.
The PDP urged its members, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies, and the media to disregard any claims regarding a purported congress in Calabar. The party assured that an official announcement would be made in due course regarding the rescheduled event.
The NWC commended the South South state governors, party leaders, stakeholders, and members for their continued loyalty and commitment to the unity and progress of the PDP in the South South region and across the nation.
The statement was signed by Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP.
