PDP Governors Convene in Abuja to Address Rivers Crisis, Other National Matters
A high-stakes meeting of the People’s Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP-GF) is ongoing at the Oyo State Governors Lodge in Abuja today, where prominent figures from the party have convened to address pressing issues, primarily centered around the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
Sited at the venue of the meeting are Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, and Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki. Notably, these political heavyweights were summoned to Abuja in response to the alarming escalation of tensions in Rivers State.
The crisis in Rivers State has captured the attention of the political landscape in Nigeria, with the state’s current Governor, Mr. Similaye Fubara, and his predecessor, Barrister Nyesom Wike, locked in a bitter feud. What makes this situation particularly unique is that both Wike and Fubara are members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), despite Wike currently serving as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under the All Progressives Congress (APC) government.
A source within the PDP-GF, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the emergency session was deemed necessary to prevent the Rivers State crisis from escalating further. The source emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We cannot afford to close our eyes while things are going wrong. As a Forum (PDP-GF), we must act fast to ensure that this crisis doesn’t go out of hand, as such will not be to the benefit of anybody.”
The meeting also addressed other important political developments. Discussions included preparations for upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States. Additionally, various issues of national significance were expected to be on the agenda.
This gathering of PDP Governors reflects the party’s commitment to addressing internal disputes and political challenges, as well as maintaining unity within its ranks while engaging with broader national concerns. The outcome of this meeting could have far-reaching implications for the party and the political landscape in Nigeria.
