PDP Cracks Down on Defectors, Plans Leadership Overhaul
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is preparing a major restructuring of its South-South leadership in a bid to remove disloyal members and halt the ongoing wave of defections threatening the party’s stability ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A member of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), speaking anonymously, disclosed that the decision follows increasing frustration within the party over the recent exodus of high-profile figures. The NWC views the defections as a direct threat to the PDP’s internal coherence and electoral future.
“This will not be business as usual,” the source told *Sunday PUNCH*. “When the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and his predecessor, Ifeanyi Okowa, left, the NWC resolved to challenge their defection in court. That process is ongoing. Regarding Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, who defected on Saturday, the party will respond after the Sallah break.”
According to the official, these moves are damaging the party’s internal machinery, as many of the defectors’ loyalists continue to occupy key positions across state and zonal structures. “We must clean house,” the official said. “The South-South leadership will be overhauled. Only truly committed members will remain. No more room for political opportunists.”
The PDP has faced persistent internal strife since the 2023 elections, culminating in a series of high-level defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). On April 23, Governor Oborevwori, former governor Okowa, and several party leaders exited the PDP. Governor Eno followed last weekend, after prolonged negotiations with the APC.
Reacting to the latest defection, PDP Deputy National Youth Leader, Timothy Osadolor, acknowledged the emotional blow but emphasized the party’s focus on regrouping. “No political party enjoys losing significant figures, especially a sitting governor from a strategic state like Akwa Ibom. But we now need to focus on rebuilding with those who are loyal,” he said.
Osadolor didn’t hold back in his criticism of Governor Eno, accusing him of prioritising political gain over public good. “It is disappointing. Many expected a cleric like him to lead with compassion and service. Instead, he appears focused solely on securing a second term,” he stated.
Despite the turbulence, Osadolor expressed hope that the recent departures could serve as a cleansing moment for the PDP. “Let those who want to leave go now. We’re even willing to escort them out. The sooner they’re gone, the faster we can begin the work of healing and repositioning the party for the future. All hope is not lost.”
