PDP Board of Trustees Reacts to Ongoing Crisis Within Party’s NWC

In response to the ongoing turmoil within the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT) has issued a statement urging all factions to resolve their differences and restore stability to the organization.

The call for unity comes on the heels of significant leadership changes within the PDP. Following the suspension of Acting National Chairman Ambassador Illiya Damagum and National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu due to alleged disloyalty, the NWC appointed Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed as the new Acting National Chairman. This appointment was made in accordance with the party’s constitution and takes immediate effect.

In the BoT’s statement, Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara emphasized the need for reconciliation, stating, “The BoT calls on all sides of the NWC to sheath their swords and de-escalate the tension. The warring persons must, in the overall interest of the party, revert to the status quo to preserve the unity and stability of our great party.”

Wabara acknowledged that disagreements are part of any political organization but stressed the importance of maintaining the PDP’s tradition of internal democracy. He indicated that the BoT plans to convene with NWC members to facilitate discussions aimed at restoring normalcy and fostering reconciliation. “We understand that disagreements may arise, but as a party with a long-standing tradition of internal democracy, we must not let these challenges derail our collective vision,” he said.

The BoT also appealed to party members and supporters to remain calm during this critical period. “The PDP has an effective conflict resolution mechanism, and we are confident that the current issues will be addressed and resolved in a manner that strengthens the party,” Wabara added.

As the PDP prepares for its upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for October 24, 2024, the Board of Trustees remains committed to promoting peace, unity, and progress within the party.
