Party Crisis: PDP Governors Raise Concerns Over APC Interference, Set Up Reconciliation Committee
In a recent closed-door meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum in Abuja, concerns were raised about possible interference from the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the opposition party’s internal challenges. The meeting, which was convened to address critical issues ahead of the 2027 general elections, saw the attendance of both current and former PDP governors, as well as key party leaders, including the chairman of the party and members of the National Working Committee.
Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, who chairs the PDP Governors Forum, briefed journalists after the discussions. He emphasized that the meeting focused on navigating the party through its internal divisions, litigations, and misgivings to ensure unity. The governors also discussed preparations for the upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, set for May 27, and an early convention in August.
Governor Mohammed underscored the importance of unity within the party, stating that addressing internal disputes is crucial for presenting a strong front moving into the 2027 elections. He also revealed the formation of a seven-member reconciliation committee, led by former Senate President and ex-Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki, aimed at resolving ongoing party conflicts and promoting harmony.
In a more candid moment, Governor Mohammed acknowledged the recent wave of defections within the PDP, but framed the departures as a strengthening force rather than a weakness. “This is some of the manifestations in a democratic set-up like this that we have, and this is what is forcing us to come together. Rather than diminishing and weakening, it is making us stronger,” he said, adding that the party would ensure that regions with a strong history and structure would not be left behind.
Although Governor Mohammed refrained from directly accusing the APC of causing the crises within the PDP, he hinted at external influence, suggesting that while the APC might not be the sole cause of the party’s issues, it could be playing a role. “We wouldn’t want to blame the APC for causing crisis, but they are likely to be the ones. We are not saying they are the ones,” he noted.
The PDP governors reassured their supporters that the party was united and committed to overcoming its challenges, signaling their intent to reclaim political relevance in the coming elections. They emphasized their resolve to ensure that the upcoming NEC and convention would be harmonious and free of rancor, as they continue their preparations for the 2027 general elections.
