Paris 2024: COVID-19 Disrupts Games as Several Athletes Test Positive
As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games unfold, COVID-19 has once again emerged as a concern, impacting several athletes and prompting renewed precautionary measures.
The virus has led to notable withdrawals, including Australian swimmer Lani Pallister, who was forced to exit the women’s 1500 meters freestyle event. However, a team spokeswoman stated that Pallister’s withdrawal was strategic, aiming to conserve her energy for the upcoming 4x200m freestyle relay.
British swimmer Adam Peaty, who narrowly missed out on the 100m breaststroke gold, has also tested positive. Peaty is focusing on a swift recovery to contribute to the relay events later this week. Despite his condition, Peaty’s teammate Matt Richards assured that the situation is manageable, emphasizing the team’s resilience and commitment to competing despite health challenges.
Several members of the Australian women’s water polo team tested positive before the opening ceremony, leading to isolation protocols. Despite this, the team continued to perform strongly, securing an 8-3 victory over Serbia on Tuesday.
In contrast to the strict protocols of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the Beijing 2022 Winter Games, Paris 2024 is operating with more relaxed COVID-19 measures. Anne Descamps, Chief Communications Director for Paris 2024, noted that while athletes who test positive are required to wear masks, overall COVID-19 cases in France remain low.
British swimmer Jacob Whittle highlighted the team’s increased precautions, including regular hand sanitizing and mask-wearing in communal spaces. Canada’s Chief Medical Officer, Mike Wilkinson, also emphasized ongoing infection prevention strategies, such as frequent disinfection of shared spaces and isolation protocols for sick athletes.
