Ousted Lagos Speaker Obasa Holds Plenary Session with Four Lawmakers

Mudashiru Obasa, the ousted speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, presided over a controversial plenary session on Thursday with only four lawmakers in attendance. Despite the assembly having 40 members, the majority of lawmakers refused to participate, even though they were present at the complex.

Reports indicate that security operatives forced open the chamber doors to grant Obasa and his supporters access. Among those who attended the session were Ayinde Akinsanya and Noheem Adams, representing Mushin constituencies I and II, respectively.

Earlier in the day, Obasa arrived at the assembly complex with his security detail and declared himself as the rightful speaker. He insisted that his removal did not follow due process, stating, “I’ve never been removed. Impeachment or removal is democratic and constitutional, but in doing that, you must follow due process. I am not against that. If I do that, then I am not democratic.”

Obasa was removed from office on January 13 while he was abroad, with Mojisola Meranda sworn in as his replacement.
