Optimism Grows for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release as Deputy Speaker Kalu Speaks
The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has expressed optimism about the potential release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021, facing a treason trial.
Speaking during a meeting in Abuja with the South East Legislators Forum, Kalu revealed that high-level discussions are ongoing with relevant authorities to facilitate Kanu’s release. The forum, comprising lawmakers from State Houses of Assembly across the five Southeast states, was led by Ebonyi State House Majority Leader, Kingsley Ikoro.
Kalu assured attendees that significant efforts are being made behind the scenes, expressing hope that these negotiations will soon yield positive results. “I am fighting for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to come out. Very soon, it will happen. Please, keep us in your prayers,” he stated.
During the meeting, the deputy speaker emphasized the need for unity and collaboration among Southeast political leaders, urging lawmakers to support constitutional amendments and the South East Development Commission (SEDC). He also called for an end to the region’s sit-at-home protests, which he described as self-destructive.
Kalu highlighted the importance of collective action and networking for regional development, stressing that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has good intentions for the Southeast and the nation at large. He encouraged lawmakers to leverage their roles for legislative growth and robust representation.
The delegation’s leader, Kingsley Ikoro, reaffirmed their support for Kalu, describing him as the political leader of the Southeast. “In the political setting today, you are our leader. We came to pay a solidarity visit and pledge our homage,” Ikoro said, representing legislators from Anambra, Abia, Enugu, Ebonyi, and Imo states.
Kalu further urged the lawmakers to rally behind the proposed Constitution amendment process, which is expected to begin in the first and second quarters of next year. He also outlined key areas for development in the region, including security, agriculture, infrastructure, energy, and technology, stressing the importance of regional town hall meetings to drive collective growth.
