OPINION: What is Happening in Edo State Politics is Scary! By Mazi Ejimofor Opara

Since yesterday, I have tried to refrain from passing any comments on this development, but something about the reactions that have followed leave me restless. First, let me remind us that there is nothing to learn from the evolving brigandage of the Labour Party across the country. In Anambra, they have left their collective image making megaphone in the hands of a character who represents everything Ndi Anambra wish to forget in their recent political history. Let me leave it here.

Again, I am part of those who have questioned the Labour Party’s ideological bent when it comes to addressing the Nigerian political question. I see no real difference beyond a change of cloak for political OGs having a field day on the gullibility of legitimately angry young people desirous of a change the Labour Party is incapable of providing. Nigeria is evolving, her politics is gradually tilting away from this low point of virulent/violent opposition. I am not so sure the Labour Party is tilting with the rest of Nigerians, as they have become fixated on and caught up by the ills they supposedly want to correct.

The trending video of gruesome manhandling of a factional Labour Party Youth leader in Edo state is condemnable. I am sure, that by the time the effect of this ignominious attack will begin to manifest on the political fortunes of the Labour Party, it may be too late to cry, because the wise bird would have perched over their head whistling, “Ukochukwu na the same people”. The reactions of Nigerians on X (formerly Twitter) is an indication that reality is rapidly dawning on many people.

“You mean you can derive joy in molesting others? What makes you different from those you are critical of?

“There’s no civil way of exercising dissent or difference of opinions than a resort to thuggery from a party intending to serve as a credible alternative model?”
