Onyeka Onwenu to Be Laid to Rest Before Month’s End, Family Confirms

The family of the iconic singer Onyeka Onwenu has confirmed that her remains will be laid to rest before the end of this month. This announcement was made during a condolence visit by the Musical Society of Nigeria (MCSN) delegates at her Ikoyi, Lagos residence.

Onwenu, a revered member of MCSN, passed away suddenly last Tuesday following her performance at a birthday party. The delegation, led by Orits Wiliki, Chairman of the MCSN Board of Trustees, was received by Onwenu’s sons, Abram and Tjiani. They expressed their intention to honor their late mother’s wishes by arranging her burial promptly.

“The burial arrangements will be announced in the coming days,” they stated.

Among those paying tribute was King Sunny Ade, who was deeply moved. In the condolence register, he wrote: “Dear sister and colleague, may your gentle soul rest in perfect peace. Your fans and friends all over the world will remember you forever.”

Onwenu had previously expressed her desire for a modest funeral in an opinion piece for Premium Times in 2021. She wrote, “Do it quickly, quietly and privately. Mourn, yes but not excessively. Celebrate me with prayers, lunch or dinner afterwards. Share some jokes about me and laugh.”
