One-Storey Building Collapses in Lagos, Trapping Two Women and a Baby

In a horrifying incident this Friday morning, a one-storey building with a penthouse in Ebute Meta, Lagos state, has collapsed, leaving three individuals, including an infant, trapped under the debris.

According to a statement by Margaret Adeseye, the director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the emergency was reported at 09:00 hours at 122 Herbert Macaulay Way, Lagos Bus Stop, Ebute Meta. The rescue team is currently on site, tirelessly working to extricate the victims.

Adeseye confirmed that one adult female has been successfully rescued and is in stable condition, while efforts are ongoing to reach the two others.

This incident adds to the disturbing trend of building collapses in Lagos, raising concerns about the structural integrity of constructions in the area. In November, a tragic event unfolded on Oloto Street, Ebute Metta, where an elderly woman lost her life in the partial collapse of a two-storey building. Similarly, in September, a building with over 500 rooms in the Ketu area collapsed during heavy rainfall, injuring two residents. Originally constructed as a school but later converted into residential apartments, the building’s partial collapse highlighted the potential risks associated with such conversions.

The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service urges residents to remain vigilant and report any concerns about the structural integrity of buildings to prevent further tragedies. The state emergency response is fully activated as they continue their search and rescue efforts at the site of the latest building collapse.
