Man killed, wife critically injured as granite truck crushes car at Eleko Junction
A man died and his wife sustained critical injuries on Thursday morning after a granite-laden truck lost control and fell onto their Toyota saloon car at Eleko Junction along the Lekki–Ajah Expressway in Lagos.
The crash occurred on February 12 when the truck, travelling from the Epe axis toward Ajah, reportedly suffered a brake failure as it approached the junction.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the articulated truck veered off its lane after the malfunction and rammed into the couple’s car, which was heading toward Epe. The impact caused the truck to topple onto the smaller vehicle, trapping the driver inside the wreckage.
LASTMA officials, working with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and bystanders, pulled the man from the crushed car. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was rescued with severe injuries and taken for urgent medical treatment.
LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq said the truck driver fled the scene after the crash. Police officers from the Akodo Division later secured the area during the rescue operation.
The body of the deceased and the injured woman were transported by FRSC ambulance for medical and mortuary procedures.
In a separate incident the same day, a 33,000-litre fuel tanker caught fire around midnight near Ile-Zik inward Magboro on the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.
LASTMA’s rescue team and the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded to the scene and put out the fire before it spread. Traffic was temporarily diverted into the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane to allow emergency access. The road was reopened after the operation.
