One Dead, Others Missing in Sagamu-Benin Expressway Kidnapping
The tranquility of the Sagamu-Benin Expressway was shattered as a group of armed kidnappers struck at the Ilisan/Iperu axis, resulting in the abduction of several travellers and the tragic loss of one life. The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the harrowing incident, shedding light on the grim details.
According to SP Omolola Odutola, the State Police Public Relations Officer, the abduction unfolded on Friday evening, sending shockwaves through the region. While the exact number of abductees remains uncertain, the assailants ruthlessly took the life of an unidentified traveller.
Describing the chilling sequence of events, Odutola recounted how a gang of armed individuals wielding AK-47 rifles swiftly commandeered the Benin-Sagamu expressway, instilling fear and chaos among motorists. The Divisional Police Officer of Ilisan swiftly responded to the distress call, discovering the aftermath of the heinous act: two vehicles riddled with bullet holes and one lifeless body, a grim testament to the violence that unfolded.
Among the belongings left behind in the chaos were a cross bag containing N113,000, two iPhones, and the vehicles themselves – a Lexus jeep 300 registered under Chilaka Lugard and a Lexus jeep 350 belonging to Kingsley Chineme. Tragically, one of the vehicles also served as the final resting place for the unidentified victim, fatally shot in the head.
Despite the gravity of the situation, there was a glimmer of hope as one of the abducted individuals, the driver of a vehicle loaded with plantains, managed to secure his freedom. However, the scars of the ordeal remain, with the other victims still in the clutches of their captors.
In response to the brazen attack, Commissioner of Police Abiodun Alamutu wasted no time in mobilizing the full force of law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice. Urgent directives were issued to tactical commanders and mobile squadrons to pursue the criminals relentlessly.
With the scene of the crime visited by the police commissioner himself, assurances were given to the public that every effort would be made to ensure the swift apprehension of the perpetrators.
