The Trump Presidency had blocked her nomination despite overwhelming support from member countries.
However once Trump lost his re-election bid, it was believed that a Biden presidency would rescind the decision.
Dr Okonjo-Iweala took to her twitter handle to register her thanks to the US and all others who supported her bid.
She also thanked her closest rival South Korean Mrs Yoo who graciously stepped down for her when it was obvious she was in an unassailable lead.
Grateful for the expression of support from the US today for DG @WTO. Congratulations to Madam Yoo of Rep. Korea for a hard fought campaign.Thank You President Muhammadu Buhari @MBuhari &all Nigerians for your unflinching support.Thank you friends. Love to my family.Glory to God.
