“Obi Is Committed to Coalition, Not Deceiving Nigerians — ADC Replies Datti Baba-Ahmed

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has responded to recent comments made by Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), clarifying that his remarks do not represent the views of the opposition coalition.

Speaking in a Channels Television interview earlier this week, Baba-Ahmed alleged that the coalition under the ADC platform was “deceiving Nigerians.” He also disclosed his intention to contest alongside Peter Obi in the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Saturday, ADC Deputy National Publicity Secretary Jackie Wayas described Baba-Ahmed’s position as personal, while emphasizing that the coalition remains united and forward-looking.

“Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed is a respected voice who has always stood for integrity and justice. Since the coalition is a collective effort requiring the strength of all patriots, we sincerely hope he comes on board to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria,” Wayas said.

She stressed that the coalition was formed after extensive consultations with key political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai; former Senate President David Mark; former Osun governor Rauf Aregbesola; former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi; and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.

According to Wayas, Obi has already reaffirmed his commitment to the alliance and the adoption of ADC as its platform for 2027. She cited Obi’s July 3, 2025 public statement where he declared:

“Yesterday, the coalition members formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 Nigeria General Elections… Our commitment is to sacrifice and work together towards the 2027 General Elections, ensuring that Nigeria gets a competent, capable, and compassionate leadership that will prioritise the nation’s future by putting the welfare of Nigerians first.”

Wayas reiterated that the coalition places national interest above partisan politics and is determined to present Nigerians with an alternative that is competent, compassionate, and focused on alleviating hardship.

“Nigerians deserve clarity and unity in the pursuit of a better future. Let us rally behind the ADC and rescue Nigeria,” she added.
