NYSC Reacts to Viral Report of Extending Service Year of Corps Member Who Criticised Tinubu
By Arthur Maduka
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has denied reports that it extended the service year of Lagos-based corps member Rita Uguamaye, popularly known as Raye, as punishment for her criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Raye gained widespread attention several months ago after posting a video online where she decried the worsening economic conditions in the country. In the same video, she described Lagos State as having poor living conditions and being “smelly,” comments that sparked significant backlash and online debate. Following the video’s virality, she claimed via TikTok that she had received threats from NYSC officials.
On Tuesday, June 24, fresh reports circulated online alleging that Raye’s service year had been extended by two months. Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore amplified the claims, accusing the NYSC of punishing her for speaking out against the federal government. He further threatened to protest at the upcoming NYSC Passing Out Parade if the alleged extension was not reversed.
“This is not acceptable,” Sowore stated. “We will mobilise down to the Passing Out Parade except Rita is allowed to complete her NYSC national service without let or hindrance.”
In response, the NYSC dismissed the claims as unfounded. Acting Director of Press and Public Relations, Carol Embu, clarified that Rita Uguamaye is still actively serving and has not reached the point where any decision about service extension would even be considered.
According to Embu, such decisions are only made when a corps member is passing out, and even then, based on specific guidelines. She questioned the credibility of the source of the claims and reaffirmed NYSC’s adherence to due process.
“Who is Sowore? Does he work with the NYSC? So how come you are listening to him?” she said. “I don’t understand how she will get an extension if she is still serving. NYSC is not an irresponsible organisation; we work with rules and regulations. She is still serving; if she has any issues, we will wait and see.”
