Nutritionist Urges Nigerians to Embrace Edible Insects as Affordable Protein Source Amid Rising Food Prices

With the soaring prices of beef, chicken, and fish making them increasingly unaffordable for many households, nutrition experts are calling on Nigerians to explore alternative, affordable sources of protein to maintain healthy diets.

Former President of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria, Prof. Wasiu Afolabi, advised that Nigerians turn to traditional yet often overlooked protein options, including beans, soybeans, mushrooms, snails, and even edible insects.

“Soybeans are particularly important because they can be processed into meat analogues that look and taste like meat but are plant-based. Mushrooms are also nutritious and widely accepted in our communities,” Afolabi said.

He further noted that insects such as crickets, termites, and locusts—once part of traditional diets—remain rich sources of protein, though they have fallen out of favor among younger generations. Other affordable substitutes he recommended include lentils, locust beans (iru), and crayfish, though he cautioned that crayfish prices are also rising.

“These traditional foods are highly nutritious. For example, locust beans combined with ground crayfish can effectively replace meat in soups and stews,” he explained.

Supporting Afolabi’s position, Prof. Ignatius Onimawo, Vice-Chancellor of Ave Maria University, Abuja, stressed the importance of nutritional education in helping Nigerians make healthier, cost-effective choices.

“There are food groups that provide the same nutrients—energy, minerals, and proteins—at different costs. With the right information, families can prepare cheaper meals without sacrificing nutrition,” Onimawo said.

He emphasized that while animal proteins are superior, plant-based proteins such as beans, groundnuts, and bambara nuts (okpa) can adequately meet daily protein needs.

As the economic strain deepens, experts are urging Nigerians to embrace these diverse and locally available options to safeguard against malnutrition.
