North Korea releases picture of Kim Jong Un and daughter at rifle range Amid Succession Speculation
North Korea has released images showing leader Kim Jong Un and his teenage daughter at a military shooting range, fuelling speculation that she is being prepared for a future leadership role.
The photographs, published by state news agency Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), show Kim and his daughter firing a “new generation sniper’s rifle” at an undisclosed location. Senior officials, including Kim’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, were also present. KCNA said the rifles were gifts to key military commanders in recognition of their service to the ruling Workers’ Party of Korea, with Kim describing the weapon as impressive.
A total of 27 images were released. Reviews by international media suggested one image, showing the girl firing the rifle, may have been altered using artificial intelligence, while the others appeared authentic.
The teenager, widely believed to be named Kim Ju Ae, has become increasingly visible at major state events. She was recently seen beside her father as he reviewed thousands of troops marching through Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang. Her appearances at missile tests and party gatherings have intensified speculation that she could become the fourth-generation leader of the Kim family, which has ruled North Korea since before the Korean War in 1950.
Earlier this year, South Korea’s intelligence agency said it believes Kim is moving toward positioning his daughter as a potential successor, though Pyongyang has not confirmed any succession plans. The rifle-range event followed a ruling party congress where Kim’s leadership was reaffirmed and his sister, Kim Yo Jong, was promoted to head a party department, strengthening her influence. Analysts say the images are likely intended to signal continuity and prepare the public for a future transition, while keeping formal succession decisions undisclosed.
