“No State-Sponsored Christian Genocide in Nigeria” — Bishops
A group of Christian bishops in Abuja on Friday rejected claims of a state-sponsored genocide against Christians in Nigeria. The clerics were responding to comments by former U.S. President Donald Trump, who labeled Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged attacks on Christians.
Speaking to journalists ahead of the North West Peace Summit and Humanitarian Awards scheduled for December 17 and 18, Bishop Timothy Cheren, who led the delegation, said there was no evidence supporting allegations of government-backed genocide. He noted, however, that certain groups may be contributing to violence in the country.
Cheren praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts in addressing insecurity and called on Nigerians to support ongoing campaigns against terrorism and banditry. While acknowledging the country’s complex security challenges, he emphasized that solutions require cooperation between the government and citizens.
The bishops also urged religious leaders to avoid inflammatory rhetoric and extremist teachings that could trigger violence. “The presence of peace does not mean the absence of justice. The government must ensure anyone involved in incitement is brought to book,” Cheren said.
The clerics welcomed the appointment of Gen. C.G. Musa as Minister of Defence, describing it as a positive step for national security. They encouraged the government to view recent U.S. warnings as an opportunity to strengthen collaboration in combating terrorism.
In addition, the bishops commended the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, for his efforts in promoting peace, calling him a “harbinger of unity” for the North and the nation. Cheren highlighted that the upcoming North West Peace Summit in Kaduna, which will be chaired by the Sultan, aims to support government and stakeholder initiatives for lasting peace across the North West and sub-Saharan Africa.
