No Secrecy in My Government, I Ran a Transparent Leadership – Buhari
In a recent address at the launch of two publications documenting his presidency, Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari asserted that his government operated with transparency and accountability throughout his eight years in office.
Speaking at the event where Femi Adesina’s book, ‘Working with Buhari: Reflections of a Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, 2015 – 2023,’ and a volume of five books titled ‘Muhammadu Buhari: The Nigerian Legacy (2015 – 2023),’ edited by Dr. Udu Yakubu, were unveiled, Buhari stressed that there was no secrecy in his administration.
Buhari, who handed over the presidency to his party colleague, President Bola Tinubu, on May 29, 2023, remarked, “Nothing was done under the veil of secrecy. We were as transparent and accountable as possible, being aware that posterity would be the ultimate judge.”
Acknowledging the importance of record-keeping, he highlighted, “We kept records of our stewardship, knowing that we would always be required to account for the trust entrusted to us.”
Referring to the event as part of the accountability for his two terms in office, Buhari expressed gratitude to those who contributed to documenting the history of his presidency, emphasizing the continuity of government as a relay race. “Government is a continuum. You run your course and hand over the baton to the next person,” he concluded.
