No Place for Ethnic Bigotry in Nigeria, Says Tinubu

 

In a nationwide address, President Bola Tinubu emphasized that the Nigeria he envisions is one devoid of ethnic bigotry. Speaking in Abuja on Sunday morning, Tinubu’s message coincided with ongoing #EndBadGovernance protests.

 

The President sternly warned individuals and groups inciting ethnic tensions to cease their activities, declaring, “The law will catch up with you.”

 

The #EndBadGovernance protests, which started on Thursday as a response to rising living costs and widespread hunger, have escalated into violence, resulting in significant property damage and loss of life across the nation. Reports confirm at least 17 deaths during the protests.

 

Amid the unrest, certain individuals have used social media to demand that all Igbos leave Lagos State by August 20-30, 2024, or face massive protests. Additionally, there were calls for South-West indigenes in the South-Eastern region to return home.

 

President Tinubu condemned these actions, stating, “To those who have taken undue advantage of this situation to threaten any section of this country, be warned: The law will catch up with you. There is no place for ethnic bigotry or such threats in the Nigeria we seek to build.”

 

He concluded by reaffirming the importance of constitutional rights, saying, “Our democracy progresses when the constitutional rights of every Nigerian are respected and protected.”
