“No Candidate Above 55 Will Contest on ADC Platform in 2027” — Factional Chairman Nafiu Bala
A factional chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Nafiu Bala, says the party should not field candidates older than 55 in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to the BBC Hausa Service, Bala said the proposal is intended to create opportunities for younger Nigerians to participate in leadership.
He criticised what he described as the influx of older politicians into the party, arguing that leadership positions should be opened up to a new generation. According to him, the age limit would be a key priority under his leadership.
The ADC is currently divided by a leadership dispute, with rival factions claiming control of the party. The Independent National Electoral Commission has not formally recognised any of the factions, deepening uncertainty within the party.
Bala also rejected allegations that he is being influenced by the ruling All Progressives Congress to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections, describing the claims as baseless.
On his absence from a reconciliation meeting reportedly convened by former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Bala said he had prior commitments and questioned the legitimacy of the invitation. He added that internal party matters should not be discussed outside formal structures.
He maintained that resolving the crisis requires adherence to the party’s constitution and due process for membership. Bala also urged dissenting members to accept his leadership, despite criticisms related to his age and background, stating that leadership is not determined by social status.
