NNPP Warns of Crisis if Denied Kano Mandate, Appeals to Global Leaders for Intervention
In a fervent plea, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has issued a stern warning that any denial of its mandate in Kano state could escalate into a crisis that transcends national borders, impacting other African nations. The NNPP’s National Auditor, Ladipo Johnson, conveyed the party’s concerns during a statement reading at the ECOWAS, European Union, American Embassy, and British High Commission offices.
The party, dissatisfied with the outcomes of the Kano governorship election at the Tribunal and Appeal Court, alleges clandestine efforts to subvert the will of the majority who elected Abba Kabir Yusuf on March 18. Johnson highlighted the heightened tension in Kano, stemming from perceived electoral injustices in the 2019 general elections, and emphasized the NNPP’s commitment to pursuing legal avenues for justice.
“As we head towards the final adjudication in the Supreme Court, there is palpable tension in Kano. The city’s atmosphere is enveloped in anger, with a sense of shock and agony pervading every discussion on the streets, offices, and homes,” expressed Johnson.
The NNPP urged the Supreme Court to embrace substantial justice, emphasizing the potential repercussions of denying Kano’s mandate. Johnson underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, “The deliberate hijack of a people’s mandate in Kano will no doubt have consequences politically, economically, and socially, especially in light of its humanitarian repercussions.”
The party also called upon key stakeholders, including the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and various Northern forums and associations, to draw attention to the case and ensure justice for NNPP and the people of Kano. The NNPP’s plea extends to global leaders, emphasizing that the consequences of such actions could reverberate not only in Nigeria but also across Africa and the world.
