Nnamdi Kanu Signals Support for Genuine Nigeria Restructuring

Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has conveyed his openness to a genuine restructuring of Nigeria, emphasizing alignment with the 1963 Constitution. Kanu, currently in solitary confinement at the Abuja headquarters of the Department of State Services (DSS), shared his perspective through his younger brother, Prince Emmanuel.

Kanu maintains that a comprehensive restructuring is vital for the nation’s growth and progress, criticizing the existing unworkable unitary structure. He reiterated his call for a referendum, asserting that unless opponents of restructuring reconsider, the demand for determining Biafra’s future through a referendum remains unchanged.

Blaming those who disrupted the 2017 peace process for the current insecurity in the South East, Kanu emphasized the need for true reconciliation, including the rebuilding and equitable development of the marginalized South East and Biafra land. He specifically demanded critical infrastructure, such as a commercial seaport and an international airport with a cargo wing.

Kanu’s stance reflects the deep-seated injustice against Biafrans, citing historical events like the pogroms, war, and deliberate marginalization. He expressed disappointment over the consistent rejection of calls to return to the 1963 constitution, advocating for a new constitution based on true federalism and power devolution.

Despite his unjust incarceration since June 2021, Kanu stands firm in his pursuit of Biafra’s restoration through non-violent means. The Supreme Court’s recent decision to refer him to the High Court for trial on treason charges has sparked growing appeals for his release from prominent Nigerians, who link his detention to the ongoing insecurity in the South East.
